Ankle De La Riva Sweep: Live Competition Breakdown
This is a sweep I used at the 2011 Mundials. This is an unusual way to play De La Riva guard, but when your opponent pushes into you with their lead leg, this style of DLR can become available. It puts tremendous pressure on their shin and knee which presents you with several sweep options. In this case I use a tomanagi motion to bring him over the top of me, then I used my hips to execute the sweep. There are several sweeps from this position, but they all resound from one singular principle. The main point of the ankle variance of the DLR guard is trapping the lead leg and putting pressure on it so that the person can no longer drive with that leg. That leg carries all of their balance from that position, and once you negate their pressure you have your choice of sweeps.
