Rafael Mendes By The Numbers

Breaking down a total of 12 matches accounting for over 75 minutes of footage  compiled over the last two years I have created a short summary breakdown of Pan, World, and Abu Dhabi champion Rafael Mendes. Below is a collection of charts, metrics, and stats that paint a very good picture of how Mendes is beating everyone.

There are a lot of techniques and stats left out simply because they were not used or displayed in the 12 matches I observed.

After evaluating the above information we can see the trends that make up Rafael’s “game”. He always pulls guard (type depending on opponent), he plays De La Riva to sweep, and when he gets on top he leg drag passes to get the back.  Obviously it’s more than it appears, but notice how little he diversifies his techniques in over 75 minutes of footage. It’s funny to think he does the same types of things to everyone, and rarely strays from the formula.

This isn’t meant to show the “best techniques for everyone”, it’s meant to show the prevalence of a game. Every good BJJ guy can be broken down this way. What do your charts look like, are they more complicated than this? Stay tuned, in several months I will make all these tools available to BishopBJJ.com followers so you can evaluate your own game in competition, training, and outside the mats.

Thanks,
