Jiu Jitsu For Life

You have probably heard the saying, “jiu jitsu isn’t a martial art, it’s a lifestyle” before, but what does that really mean. Is it what you eat, how you act, the language you speak, the principles you embody, or something more?

We recently had the opportunity to spend some time in southern Florida at South Florida Fight Club, operated by blackbelts Felipe and Sofia Amarante. They provided us with some new insight into the idea of jiu jitsu as a  lifestyle. We captured a lot of this perspective in the video above. They even started a brand that supports this entire concept called, JiuJitsu4Life. We are continually amazed by how fundamentally good the jiu jitsu community is to the core, it’s actually very inspiring, and hopefully the video above will give you a new perspective as well.

Jiu Jitsu  will teach you everything you need to know about life. It teaches you humility, how to learn, how to lose, how to win, and shows you the competitive nature of life. But jiu jitsu will also show you how to treat people. Everyone starts off in jiu jitsu as an infant, totally reliant on others for their nourishment. As we mature in our journey in jiu jitsu, it becomes our responsibility to help and nurture others. In life, this progression is necessary for humanity to continue on. Babies must be born, people must raise them correctly to contribute to society, and finally those babies become the future and must raise the next generation. Jiu Jitsu teaches all the important lessons in life inside a space usually smaller than 2,000 square feet.

Jiu Jitsu will also make you a better person. Life can be hard sometimes. You could lose your job, lose a loved one, or fall on hard times. In these circumstances you can quit or you can fight through it and escape. In jiu jitsu it’s the same way, you could be mounted and in danger of being submitted, and your choices are the same. You can quit or fight to escape. In jiu jitsu, one of the most valuable things you learn is how to be mentally brave. You learn when to fight and escape, how to overcome difficult circumstances, and when to fold and fight another day. You not only learn things here, but practice them on a daily basis. This is what make Jiu jitsu unique. We practice the application of our art everyday at practice.

Part of the majesty of jiu jitsu is the application. That’s why it takes so long to learn, just like you are always learning in life. After a while you learn to apply jiu jitsu in your life in the same way we practice to apply the jiu jitsu we learn on the mat. This is the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle.

We would like to hear what you think about the “jiu jitsu lifestyle”. What does it mean to you, and who best embodies it? send us your thoughts below.
